Dear Colleagues,
We write today to share the news that Dr. Marcio Oliveira will be stepping down from his role as Assistant Vice President for the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) and Academic Technology & Innovation (ATI) to accept the inaugural Vice Provost of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation position at Michigan State University, effective March 1, 2025.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Oliveira has worked tirelessly to support the mission of the university, building incredible teams and taking on special projects with an innovative and creative mindset that provided a new perspective to often complicated problems. During his 20-year career at the University of Maryland, Dr. Oliveira has made a profound impact on our pedagogical culture and introduced unique best practices in teaching and learning.
After joining the Division of Information Technology (DIT) in 2015, Dr. Oliveira reimagined and expanded DIT’s leadership in academic technology. Known for hiring SWANs (team members who are smart, wise, adaptable and nice), he placed a renewed emphasis on innovation and service, strategically expanding his team to include learning technology strategists and designers, classroom designers and support technicians, academic technology experience analysts, data scientists, and IT accessibility specialists.
At the TLTC, he fostered innovative, engaging, and equitable teaching and learning practices that have enhanced educational innovation and student success. Under his leadership, the center introduced new programs and initiatives for the UMD instructional community, such as the Teaching Innovation Grants and Teaching Academy, to advance our strategic commitment to reimagine the future of teaching and learning.
In 2020, Dr. Oliveira was awarded the President's Medal, the highest award bestowed within our university community, in recognition of his innovative track record and leadership in moving the university to remote operations due to COVID-19.
We are grateful and appreciative of his long-standing service to UMD, and we wish him the best in this new opportunity.
We plan to conduct a national search for his replacement, which will begin sometime in the spring. In the meantime, his portfolio within the Division of Academic Affairs will be overseen by Mary Warneka, who is the current Director of Teaching Innovation in TLTC. His portfolio within the Division of Information Technology will be overseen by Dr. Megan Masters, who is the current Director of Academic Technology Experience in DIT. We appreciate their willingness to provide leadership as we undertake the search.
Sincerely,
Jennifer King Rice
