Preparing for the upcoming semester

August 06, 2025

Students walking on McKeldin Mall

Dear colleagues,

At the University of Maryland, investing in our people is one of our Fearlessly Forward strategic commitments and is foundational to our continued success. As a faculty member myself, I recognize the considerable work that goes into planning for the upcoming semester—preparing materials ahead and thinking of ways to support and mentor students. I hope that you have also found time this summer to invest in yourselves, and to relax and recharge.

As we look ahead to the coming year, we find ourselves in a time of significant change and uncertainty across higher education. Just yesterday, President Pines sent an email to the campus community with updates and reminders of the resources available as we collectively navigate the current context. That message highlights our federal updates webpage, student financial aid program changes, funding impacts, support for our international community members and the many campus resources to promote the well-being of our faculty, staff and students at UMD.

I want to recognize the additional pressures brought on by these developments and reiterate our gratitude for your continued dedication to the success of our university.

Guided by our mission and values

As leaders, we remain steadfast in our resolve to uphold our mission and values as we navigate these uncertain times. Our mission includes an unwavering commitment to research, scholarship and creative work that positively impacts people and communities. At our core, we are here to provide students with an exceptional education and prepare them for meaningful, successful futures. And all that we do is in service to the public good and a brighter future for all. I am deeply proud of all you do to champion that work.

Preparations for fall break

In December of last year, we announced that beginning in 2025, a fall break would be added to the academic calendar. This change came about from carefully listening to the university senate, campus community members and student groups who advocated for the positive impact that a fall break would have on the well-being of students, faculty and staff. The two-day break for students will take place this year, October 13-14; faculty and staff will observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day on October 13. As you plan your syllabi for the fall, I encourage you to think intentionally about the timing of assignments and exams to allow for a pause over the break.

A promising year ahead

It’s hard to believe that the start of the new academic year is just around the corner. Amidst the changes we face, I see great promise ahead. You play a critical role in our success, and I am looking forward to seeing all that we are able to accomplish together.

Sincerely,

Signature of Jennifer King Rice
