Announcing Dr. Elizabeth Beise as Senior Associate Provost

February 13, 2023

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Elizabeth Beise to Senior Associate Provost, effective February 1, 2023. In this new leadership position, Dr. Beise will direct and steer initiatives and strategies within the Division of Academic Affairs. Dr. Beise will work with senior leadership to develop key projects that enrich, support and guide the core academic mission of our university.  I am grateful to her for accepting this role and taking on responsibilities that will benefit the university in many valuable ways.

Dr. Beise has served as Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Programs since 2010. She will continue to provide oversight of our regional centers and other off-campus academic initiatives, including at the Universities at Shady Grove and USMSM. Additionally, she will continue to oversee the Office of Extended Studies and serve as a member of Provost’s Academic Facilities team. Dr. Beise is the Provost’s representative and liaison with the University Senate leadership, and represents the Provost on various relevant standing and ad-hoc campus committees. Dr. Beise will continue to oversee various aspects of campus academic planning and review.

Dr. Beise earned her B.A. in Physics from Carleton College, her Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has a tenure home in UMD’s Physics department. She is a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Early in her career she received the APS’s Maria Goeppert Mayer Award. A Distinguished Scholar Teacher, she was the recipient of the Physics department’s 2008 George A. Snow Memorial Award for her work to help advance the representation of women (students and faculty) in physics, has been a University of Maryland Philip Merrill Scholar mentor, and was an early partner in the University’s NSF-funded ADVANCE initiative to support the retention and advancement of women faculty.

A search will be conducted for an Assistant Provost for Academic Planning in the coming weeks. This role will be responsible for general oversight of academic program review and curriculum development, working closely with the Office of Undergraduate Studies, with the Graduate School, and with academic units across the campus.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Beise as she takes on the Senior Associate Provost role.

Sincerely,

Jennifer King Rice
