The University has a diverse set of centers and institutes to support its research and academic missions. Selected initiatives and areas of expertise are organized by topic and supported through the Division of Research, and can be found at https://research.umd.edu/capabilities/institutes-centers. The list below contains a searchable inventory organized by college or other oversight unit.
Creation of new entities should be guided by a formal proposal and should follow the University’s Policy and Procedures for the Establishment and Review of Academic and Research-based Centers and Institutes (IV-1.00(A)). They are expected to be reviewed on a periodic basis for continued viability, relevance, compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, and contribution to the University’s mission. The University’s Research Council has developed guidelines for creation and review of centers and institutes in order to help units consider the necessary aspects of running and maintaining a vibrant collaboration.
