Interim Dean Appointment of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS)

Dear Colleagues,

I join President Pines in congratulating Dr. Gregory Ball on being named the university’s next Vice President for Research (VPR). Dr. Ball has served the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences as dean with distinction for seven years, and I look forward to working with him in his new role as VPR. I am also pleased to announce that I am appointing Dr. Wayne McIntosh as Interim Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS), effective February 1, 2022.  

Dr. Ball leaves his leadership role after serving as dean since 2014. He has overseen one of the largest colleges at the University, with a vast portfolio of majors and home to many groundbreaking research centers. Under his leadership, the college has made great strides in the investigation of some of the world’s greatest challenges, with students and faculty encouraged to develop practical applications and policies to bring about lasting change. Dean Ball’s focus and commitment have allowed the college to flourish under his leadership. The university has been made better because of his work.

Dr. McIntosh brings an extensive range of administrative experience to his new role as Interim Dean. He has served BSOS as the Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs, Director of Undergraduate Programs, Associate Chair in the Department of Government and Politics, and as an accomplished faculty member, recognized for outstanding teaching and mentorship. In addition, he has successfully competed for external funding, with two multi-year grants awarded by the National Science Foundation. 

Dr. McIntosh earned a B.A. in Political Science from The University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Washington University, St. Louis.  He was a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar Mentor, University of Maryland Faculty Mentor of the Year, and has been awarded many prizes and awards including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Panhellenic Society, Lilly-CTE Teaching Fellow, and College of Behavioral and Social Science Excellence in Teaching Award. Please join me in congratulating Dr. McIntosh on his new position, thanking him for his willingness to take on this new role, and offering him your support and assistance as he generously assumes these new administrative responsibilities.

A search committee is currently being formed as the University prepares to launch a national search for the next Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences who will lead BSOS to continued excellence in the future.
