Announcing the Reappointment of Dean Dawn Jourdan

Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the reappointment of Dawn Jourdan as Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation through June 30, 2031. This decision follows a comprehensive formal review process in accordance with university policy.  An appointed committee of faculty, staff, and students assessed Dean Jourdan’s strategic and operational leadership in advancing the school’s mission and provided constructive recommendations. The review process included a presentation by Dean Jourdan on the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation’s progress since 2021, a formal survey to support a data-driven evaluation, and a series of interviews and forums with faculty, staff, students, university leadership, and external constituents.

The review highlighted Dean Jourdan as a transformative leader who has brought strong leadership, stability, vision and purpose to the school. The report explained that Dean Jourdan’s work reflects her commitment to advancing the school’s mission in teaching, research, service and practice, while articulating a vision for the future as a modern, inclusive school. She has fostered collaboration across disciplines, strengthened interdisciplinary initiatives and cultivated meaningful partnerships with alumni, donors, corporate partners and other entities across campus and beyond.

The report also indicated her approachable interpersonal style, empathy and communication skills, which have helped to build a strong sense of community within the school. The review noted her effectiveness in supporting junior faculty development, promoting diversity and inclusivity, and fostering initiatives that enhance interdisciplinary work within the school and with external partners.

Dean Jourdan and I have discussed the review and identified opportunities for further growth that include balancing resources across programs, fostering stronger engagement between faculty and staff, and encouraging greater collaboration across disciplines. We both agreed that this will aid in the continued advancement of the school’s progress.

I am grateful for Dean Jourdan’s impactful leadership and am confident that she will continue to drive the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation toward new heights of excellence.
