Announcing our Grand Challenges Grants 2.0 Awardees

June 25, 2026

M South Campus Commons

Dear Colleagues,

In 2023, the Provost’s Office in partnership with the Division of Research launched the Grand Challenges Grants Program, a signature initiative of our Fearlessly Forward strategic plan designed to catalyze bold, interdisciplinary research projects that address society’s most pressing issues and advance solutions for the public good.

The inaugural program demonstrated extraordinary impact due to the breadth of expertise and collaborative spirit across our research enterprise. Through Grand Challenges 1.0, faculty developed innovative approaches to issues from climate resilience to food insecurity to educational equity and more. These projects strengthened partnerships across disciplines and in the community, engaged students in new experiential learning opportunities, and positioned the university for greater external funding, scholarly impact and public engagement.

Grand Challenges Grants

Building on that momentum, we were excited to launch Grand Challenges Grants 2.0 earlier this year to support ambitious new collaborations to advance high-impact research. We received nearly 80 proposals involving 400 researchers representing every college and school. Today, we are pleased to announce an investment of nearly $15 million over three years across 11 projects with faculty representing more than 40 disciplines across campus. The projects will receive a 50% matching in-kind and/or cash investment from their college or unit.
