**DATE:** October 18, 2023
**TO:** Faculty & Staff
**FROM:** Dr. Jennifer King Rice, Senior Vice President and Provost
**SUBJECT:** Search for a new Associate Provost for Community Engagement

I am pleased to announce that I have appointed a search committee and launched an aggressive national search to find an outstanding individual to fill the position of Associate Provost for Community Engagement. Kimberly Griffin, Dean of the College of Education, will chair the committee, which will be assisted by the executive search firm Academic Search. The complete list of committee members is provided below.

Serving as a senior level administrator in the Division of Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost for Community Engagement will lead the University’s new Center for Community Engagement. The Associate Provost will guide the development of a vision and mission for the center’s work, and will collaborate with the provost’s senior leadership team, academic deans, and university vice presidents as well as faculty, staff, students, and community partners to expand and support community engaged research, teaching, learning, and service activities. This leader will work with campus and community partners to integrate service learning and civic engagement into courses and academic programs, ensuring that community engagement is woven into the very fabric, values, and identity of the institution.

The Associate Provost will lead an office staff responsible for coordinating campus-wide efforts, elevating existing partnerships, and creating new community-engaged programs and initiatives. The position will provide training, development and logistical support reflecting best practices in building and sustaining mutually beneficial and mission-driven community partnerships. We seek a strategic leader who will encourage collaborative relationships and foster an environment of diversity and inclusive excellence in teaching and learning, leveraging our considerable academic strengths as a major research university. This leader will help to advance the goals of our *Fearlessly Forward* strategic plan by supporting partnerships that allow our research to have real-world impact, our education to prepare students for civic engagement, and our service to create solutions for a more equitable and sustainable world.

You can assist in the search process by using your personal contacts and networks to identify outstanding candidates for this position and to make the opportunity widely known. Please forward to Dean Griffin the names of individuals you believe would be excellent candidates by email to <kgriff29@umd.edu>. We appreciate your assistance and support in this important effort.

Sincerely,

**Jennifer King Rice**
